Why does the app take so long to figure out where I am?

GPS isn't instantaneous. It takes a little while to get a fix on the nearest GPS satellites. As well, the iPhone uses a mix of technologies to figure out where you are, each with a different precision.

Some of the locations your iPhone gives this app are not precise enough to predict how good a signal you might get. The app waits for a precise-enough location, or until it reaches a timeout and gives up on getting a finer answer.
